Science Experiment, Elephants Toothpaste

My kids love science experiments.  They think it is so fun to mix food coloring, milk, vinegar, baking soda, or whatever they can find to mix together to see what kind of reaction they can get.  The Elephant's Toothpaste was such a fun reaction to watch.  I'm sure this is an experiment we will try over and over again.  I found the idea on Science Bob's.

Elephant's Toothpaste

Ingredients

1/2 cup 20 volume hydrogen peroxide liquid (6% solution, you can get this from a beauty supply store) I only had 3% solution and it worked fine.

1 Tablespoon of dry yeast (or one packet)

3 Tablespoons of warm water

Liquid dishwashing soap

Food coloring

16 oz pop or water bottle

Instructions

Set your pop or water bottle on a large cookie sheet or inside a baking dish, as this will foam all over the place.

Hydrogen peroxide can irritate eyes and skin, so put on a pair of safety goggles. Pour the hydrogen peroxide into the bottle.

Add 8 drops of your favorite food coloring  into the bottle

Add 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap into the bottle and swish the bottle around it mix it.

In a separate cup, combine lukewarm water and yeast and mix until the yeast dissolves. 

Pour the yeast mixture into the pop bottle (a funnel will help with that process) and watch it begin to foam.
