Story of the Word Vol 1 Ch 25

Alexander the Great (336-323 bce)

If Sparta and Athens would have stayed friends like when they were fighting Persia, they could have become a strong country. But Sparta and Athens continued to fight becoming weaker and weaker. It was this bickering back and forth that lead to their destruction. King Phillip noticed the unstable country and wanted to expand his empire, so he attacked and conquered Greece. The story of Athens and Sparta reminds me of an Aesop fable:

The Four Oxen and the Lion

A LION used to prowl about a field in which Four Oxen used to dwell. Many a time he tried to attack them; but whenever he came near they turned their tails to one another, so that whichever way he approached them he was met by the horns of one of them. At last, however, they fell a-quarrelling among themselves, and each went off to pasture alone in a separate corner of the field. Then the Lion attacked them one by one and soon made an end of all four.

“UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL.”

The story of Greece can be such a good learning tool in our homes to remind us that as a united family unit we can withstand the temptations and we can help each other accomplish great things.
