Learning the 8 Parts of Speech

Add a catchy tune to the 8 parts of speech, and it is so much easier to memorize what they are.  When talking about verbs, my kids can't help but to sing "a verb is a word, an action word."  First I go over the lesson in their language books and then we watch a little clip put to music.  I am going to share those resources with you today. School House and Grammaropolis are by far the favorites and we watch them over and over again.


1.  A Noun
  • Names a person, place, thing or idea.
    • dog, park, chair, cat...

2. Pronoun 
  • Is a word used in place of a noun.
    • She, we, they, he...

3. Verb 
  • Expresses an action or state of being.

4. Adjective

  • Modifies or describes a noun or pronoun.

5. Adverb
  • Describes a verb, adjective or adverb. Tell how, when or where about a verb.

6. Prepositions
  • Links a noun to another word. Shows position or how things go together. They start prepositional phrases.

7. Conjunctions
  • Joins clauses, sentences or words together.

8. Interjections
  • Express strong or sudden feeling, a short exclamation. Usually 1 or 2 words that come at the beginning of a sentence. 
    • Hooray! Wow! Yuck! Ouch!

  2. I am so glad to hear you are enjoying the videos. I think it is easier to remember a concept when you add music and a picture to it.
