A Horse Called September

I love a good book that has great characters in it that teach life lessons.  A Horse Called September is a story of a passionate friendship between two girls growning up together on a Devon farm in the 1970's, the break up of that friendship -- and the horse that changed their life forever.

My kids love horses so they loved this book.  Every morning they would beg me to continue reading because they were so excited to see what happened next. This book is written for a preteen audience but I enjoyed reading it along with my children. The author developes the characters so fully that you get to know them well.  At times in the book I felt myself cheering for or disappointed with a character hoping that they would make a different choice.

The girls, Mary and Anna grow up together on Anna's farm.  Mary's father works for Anna's father and they live in a little cottage on the farm.   The girls both love Anna's horse September. Anna is sent to boarding school and asks Mary to take care of September while she is gone.  As Anna changes, their friendship is put to the test, feelings are hurt and resentment builds between the girls.

The book is a beautiful example of learning to forgive and building lasting friendships no matter what social class one is from. Mary and Anna both have to learn how to take steps to let go of past hurts.

This book is well worth taking the time to read. Not only do you learn from Anna and Mary, but also from their fathers who learn to work together.  I won't go into all those details as I don't want to spoil the book.
