Eliminate Busy Work With Notebooking

Notebooking Pages Free Membership
Have you tried Notebooking with your children yet?  I have added it this year to our day and I am really loving how easy it is to implement. What is Notebooking you ask? It is simply allowing your child to write and illustrate what they have learned in any subject.

How do you begin Notebooking:

1. Start by just choosing 1 or 2 subjects you want to notebook.  I started with History and Science. For science, I purchased each of my children a sketchbook.  For each science topic we study, they write a few sentences about the topic and they draw an illustration.

2. Give your child a page to can write and illustrate on. At first, you may need to guide them a little to help them know what to write and draw.  I don't tell them what to write but I ask them questions about what they learned. After they have narrated back to me facts they found interesting, they have no problem with what to write.  I don't tell my children how much they need to write but I do tell them it has to be at least a couple of sentences. As they get older, they will naturally start writing down more information.   It is always amazing to me what they remember as they are writing and illustrating.
For History, I use NoteBookingPages.com where you will find many free notebooking pages or you can sign up for the lifetime membership and have access to the whole library.  If I can't find the subject I'm looking for, I just use a 3 hole punched lined piece of paper.

3. Have a separate binder for each child to keep their pages in.  You may choose to purchase binders for each topic or use subject dividers in one binder. Keep adding to your notebook pages throughout the year. You will be amazed to look back and see all that you accomplished for the year and even more amazed at the facts your children will be able to recall.

The idea of notebooking is that your child is retelling what he/she learned in his/her own words and illustrations.  Encourage your children to show their notebooks to all who will listen, doing so will allow them to retell over and over what they have learned.

I feel that adding Notebooking to my day has taken out a lot of busy work.  I don't feel like I have to create worksheets or print off worksheets, I just hand my kids a blank piece of paper and let them have control over what they want to add to their page. I have also added notebooking to my studies.  I feel that my children are more likely to do something if I do it as well. I'm not the best illustrator but I try...
